Tracking Electrification in Vietnam Using Nighttime Lights
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report on a systematic ground-based validation of DMSP-OLS night lights imagery to detect rural electrification in Vietnam. Based on an original survey of village-level units in Vietnam, this study compares nighttime light output from the U.S. Air Force Defense Meteorological Satellite Program’s Operational Linescan System (DMSP-OLS) against ground-based survey data on electrical infrastructure and electricity use in 200 electrified villages. Monthly and annual composites record a one-point increase in brightness along DMSP-OLS’s 63-point brightness scale for every 60–70 additional streetlights or 240–270 electrified homes. Using a time series of 90 nightly images, the data show a one-point increase in brightness for every 125–200 additional streetlights, or 550–700 additional electrified homes. The results highlight the potential to use night lights imagery to support efforts to connect the 1.2 billion people who lack electricity around the world.

An Efficient Method for Multi Moving Objects Tracking at Nighttime
Traffic surveillance using computer vision techniques is an emerging research area. Many algorithms are being developed to detect and track moving vehicles in daytime in effective manner. However, little work is done for nighttime traffic scenes. For nighttime, vehicles are identified by detecting and locating vehicle headlights and rear lights. In this paper, an effective method for detecting ...
متن کاملWho Gets Public Goods? Democracy and the Provision of Electrification in the Developing World
Do democracies provide more public goods than autocracies? Clear answers to this question have been hampered by inconsistent, unreliable, or missing data. To address the shortcomings of self-reported government data, I propose a novel method to generate unbiased estimates of the provision of electrical infrastructure across the entire globe using satellite imagery of nighttime lights. After dem...
متن کاملLuminous Phenomena of Earthquakes: Observations and Theories
Over the past few years, different theories (piezoelectric, positive holes, friction-vaporization, exo-electron emission, tribo- or fracture electrification) have been presented for the interpretation of earthquake lights. Although these theories can interpret earthquake luminous, each suffer from particular problems. There are also ambiguities and questions about the location of the light, the...
متن کاملCreating a Global Grid of Distributed Fossil Fuel CO2 Emissions from Nighttime Satellite Imagery
The potential use of satellite observed nighttime lights for estimating carbondioxide (CO2) emissions has been demonstrated in several previous studies. However, the procedures for a moderate resolution (1 km 2 grid cells) global map of fossil fuel CO2 emissions based on nighttime lights are still in the developmental phase. We report on the development of a method for mapping distributed (excl...
